Growing up in Santa Monica, California Rachel Rottman spent her high school years behind the lens of a camera shooting the street and beach life of her hometown. After attending a year of art school in San Fransisco where she tried her hand at painting, photography, and film she still hadn’t found the niche that completed her creative puzzle. That changed in 2015 when she was introduced to collage. Drawn to vintage magazines, she pulls from the past creating impactful and provocative pieces. Using the precision of an exacto knife juxtaposed with the rough edges of torn paper, she takes two or three realistic images and layers them into a daydream. Rachel often uses cutouts of women from various erotic magazines and combines them with images from nature, taking her viewer into unusual yet familiar territories.
